Having a healthy diet during your pregnancy promotes the healthy growth and development of your child. While there are many nutrients and food you need to take note of, a few of them deserve special mention.
Folic Acid
Folic acid is important in preventing birth defects in the brain and spine of a baby. Folic acid supplementation has been shown to decrease the risk of premature birth and having a low birth weight baby1. A lack of folic acid might cause neural tube defects such as spina bifida or anencephaly2. The recommended intake for Folic Acid is 800 micrograms daily before conception and throughout the first three months of pregnancy3.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
DHA is essential for brain and eye development in babies. Studies have shown that pregnant women who eat cold water fish have babies with higher IQ and better vision than pregnant women who do not4.
Iodine
Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone synthesis, which is essential for normal brain development in babies. A lack of iodine during pregnancy might have adverse effects on the neurodevelopment of babies, which range from cretinism in cases of severe iodine deficiency to mild defects in cognitive and motor development in cases of mild iodine deficiency5.
